British Open

The Open Championship is also known simply as The Open – but in the US it is most often referred to as the British Open. It’s the oldest of the four major pro golf championships, and the only ”major” held outside the USA.  The R&A which is the governing body of golf outside the USA and Mexico, and so it governs The British Open.  The Open takes place on the weekend of the third Friday each July. It is the third large tournament of golf each year after The Masters and the U.S. Open, and the current champion is Darren Clarke.

Each year in either Scotland or England The British Open is held.  The Open has the lowest prize purse of all four of the majors, but is still rather up there on the scale of winnable money.  You could leave behind your home security in Virginia and take an Atlantic crossing to attend this renowned event if you are so inclined.  Here are the facts on this very European world famous golf tournament, along with some of its most illustrious players and champions and a little history as well.  Enjoy:
